Making Backyards Fun!
At Austex Fence and Deck, we’re passionate about decks because nothing utilizes a backyard living space better than a well-built Austex deck. Decks are Austin’s favorite yard feature, since they are simply great for capturing that special view of the lake, sunrises or sunsets. Whether a simple platform deck or a multilevel extravaganza, an Austex deck makes any backyard more fun.
An Austex Deck can also be a practical solution to an unruly lawn, a sloped yard, erosion, or running water. In either case, an Austex deck will be an extension of your indoor living space that’s well designed and an excellent setting for relaxing, dining, or entertaining. Austex Fence and Deck specializes in “Making Backyards Fun!”
A properly designed and planned Austex deck will:
- Encourage outdoor living year-round.
- Associate easily with steps or fences in any landscaping plan.
- Be well planned to allow for future additions
- Include elements like benches, tables, flower boxes, or storage units.
- Add privacy to your home.
- Add to the unique features of your home.
- Enhance a poolside area.
- Be used for multiple activities at various times of the day.
- Make better use of challenging Central Texas land spaces, such as damp, rocky, or relatively uneven terrain.
Deck Materials
At Austex Fence and Deck, we use only the highest quality materials in all our projects. Although Cedar Decks are most popular in Austin, Texas, there are other options. The selection depends on your needs, budget and appearence. Here are some of the different materials we can use when building decks that make backyards more distinctive … and fun!

Ipe Decks
Ipe is a very attractive, high quality hardwood and Ipe is the finest quality decking material available, since it is an extremely dense, tight-grained wood.
Ipe is generally deep rich brown in appearance with some red and amber hued accents. In addition to its greater strength than other decking woods, it has the highest rating for insect and decay resistance. Most notably, this incredibly hard wood does not require finishing and will not deteriorate over time as other woods do.
Cedar Decks
Cedar wood is well suited for decks and outdoor stair construction. Cedar is naturally decay-resistant, light in weight, easy to work with, and complements any architectural style. Cedar holds up well in the intense Central Texas sun and although it will gray over time if not stained every couple of years, it is not prone to cracking and splintering like treated pine decks.
Redwood Decks
Redwood offers beauty, longevity, and easy maintenance. At Austex Fence and Deck, we use only virgin timber, so our old growth redwood forests will remain untouched. The beauty, durability and exceptional dimensional stability of Redwood makes it a good choice for intricately crafted outdoor applications. Redwood will also gray over time if not stained.
Treated Pine Deck
Pine that has been treated is structurally superior, and resists decay and termites. It is pressure treated so the protective ingredients penetrate deeply into the heart of the wood. Austex Fence and Deck uses MicroPro treated wood which has a lighter, “natural” color that stains nicer and has better corrosion protection.
Composition Deck
This is the ecological choice. Made by combining cedar fiber and recycled material, Composition Decks are appreciated for its appearance and low maintenance. An Austex composition Deck is moisture resistant and dimensionally stable. A composition Deck is very durable, installs just like wood, looks very similar to regular wood and never requires maintenance.
Vinyl Deck
Originally designed for marine docks, Vinyl Decks are very popular for residential decking because it is very durable, attractive, slip-resistant and maintenance-free. A variety of colors are available.
Certainteed Composite Decking
Certainteed Composite Decking is an outstanding alternative to conventional deck and landscaping materials. It is created by combining reclaimed plastics and waste wood, which produces a wood-polymer lumber that is free of the drawbacks of wood and easy on the environment. Other attributes include:
- Variety of styles and options
- Superior stain resistence
- Superior color retention
- Scratch resistence and CleanSweep surface
- Class A fire rating
- Greater spans and fastener retention
- Patented EcoTech material
- 25-year limited transferable warranty with 2-year SureStart
Certainteed Composite Decking is “Family Friendly” because it’s splinter-free, has excellent traction, even when wet and there are no hassles with stains or sealants. You also have the confidence and protection of a 25 year limited transferable warranty!
Certainteed Composite Decking provides unmatched durability, easy care and comfort for a wide range of uses. It is not designed to perform as a one-for-one structural replacement for wood in all applications. Certainteed Composite Decking is not intended for primary structural load-bearing elements, such as posts, joists and beams.
Price-wise, Certainteed Composite Decking is comparable to most premium decking lumber, but when you factor in costs for stains, sealants, replacement boards and other maintenance over the next 10 years and beyond, Certainteed comes out well ahead.
