Of course this is not practical, a fence will be outside and therefore becomes another part of home maintenance. A lot of people do no preventive work and will just plan on replacement when it no longer keeps the children or dogs contained.

Others will stain on a regular basis, replace any pickets, rails or posts that fail keeping the quality of the fence as best as possible. In Central Texas, most fences are made of cedar, a dry wood that does not warp in the brutal sunshine we have here. A good quality stain will make the wood more water resistant helping the wood last longer than if it is constantly becoming water soaked.

The fence  will need to be re-stained every few years as the sun and time will wear away the stain. Sprinkler heads also need to be turned away from direct spray on the fence. When a sprinkler head is directing water on a fence, the area becomes gray sooner and the wood will break down faster where that arch is so visible.

It is also advised to keep trees trimmed and dying trees removed from around the fence. We have found that no amount of stain holds up a fence when a tree falls on it.
