Austex Fence & Deck offers many different types of components for building fences
Types of Posts
Cedar Fence Posts
Cedar fence posts are very durable and expected to last 6-10 years. They do not warp, twist or crack. Cedar fence posts do not last as long in the ground moisture as treated posts, but can look better if you choose a framed fence look instead of a front mounted panel fence.
Treated Pine Fence Posts
These fence posts are pressure-treated, so the protection penetrates deeply into the wood. Also known as Wolmanized Wood, these posts are guaranteed against termites, rot and decay by the manufacturer. Pine is strong. Its structural strength makes it more durable than cedar, but treated posts can occasionally warp, twist or crack. Austex Fence & Deck buy top quality posts direct from the mill to get a higher quality post for your project. A lot of Austin Fence Companies just run to the closest big box store and the material quality is not the same. Austex uses Micropro, the Revolutionary new way to pressure treat wood.
Landscape Timber Fence Posts
Landscape timbers sold at most retail lumber outlets are treated while green, which allows very little preservative. Austex Fence and Deck buys only timbers that are kiln-dried before treatment, which enables them to accept the proper amount of preservatives and be more durable. Austex Fence and Deck materials are delivered direct from the mill, come visit the showroom and see our MicroPro pressured treated wood. Although landscape timbers are expected to last 15+ years, these posts may occasionally warp, twist or crack. Like the treated 4×4’s, Warping, twisting and cracking of treated material is not covered under the one year warranty.
Galvanized Steel Fence Posts
The most durable choice for fence posts. No warping or twisting, and able to last for 20 or more years. Each post has a galvanized cap to keep water out of the post to keep it from rusting inside out.
Masonary Fence Columns
An elegant look and defining point for a fence is a masonary post. Improve the landscape with columns made with rock, brick or stucco.
The Fence Columns can be made to match the rock or brick on the house so the fence co-ordinates with the home and the rest of the landscaping that you have worked so hard to make “just right.” It can also be a good transition from two styles of fence, one of different material or height along a subdivision boundary and a yard fence.
Types of Fence Rails
Cedar Fence Rails
At Austex Fence & Deck, we use Western Red Cedar for our rails, because cedar won’t warp or crack as soon or as much in the intense Texas heat. Unless specified otherwise, Austex Fence and Deck sets the fence 1″ to 2″ off the ground and keeps the top of the fence straight. The ground is often uneven and it is preferred to keep the top straight and landscape any excessive gaps beneath.
Types of Pickets
Flat Top vs Dog-Eared Fence Pickets
Austin, Tx is not flat … anywhere. There is a reason we are called the “Hill Country.” Dog-eared pickets are used if there is any slope to the fence, because they break up the step down of each picket. Flat top pickets can only be used when the ground is absolutely flat and there is no change in the top elevation of the fence. Flat top pickets are rarely used because an uneven fence top becomes an eye-sore.
Western Red Cedar Fence Pickets
The #1 choice in Austin, and widely used due to its natural beauty and resistance to decay, warping and twisting. Cedar pickets are stable with minimal movement or shrinkage. Expected durability lasts from 12-15 years. Cedar can be left unfinished for a rustic weathered look. It also makes a complimentary counterpoint to lawn, garden, wild vegetation, or rocky terrain. You can let them weather naturally to a driftwood gray, or stain them to prolong the life of the wood and keep a newer wood color. They must be re-stained every couple of years.
A lot of Austin fence companies shop at the closest big box store and the quality is not the same. Visit our showroom and see the difference.
Rightwood Fence Pickets
This pre-finished whitewood fence pickets are environmentally safe. RightWood fencing is not pressure treated and does not contain metallic compounds – no arsenic, lead or copper. Rightwood is not what is commonly called “Chinese Cedar.” Whitewoods come from the largest renewable softwood supply in the United States – the “working” forests of the Pacific Northwest, a managed, renewable resource of the United States.
Spruce Fence Pickets
An economical fencing choice that ages to look like cedar. Durability is expected to last 5 -8 years. Austex Fence and Deck puts three rails on spruce fences because the wood will warp and twist.
Gate Operators
Gate Operators maintain the security of the gate while providing the convenience of opening and closing the gate without having to get out of the car or truck, possibly in poor weather, and move the gate manually. Gate operators are available in both solar powered or hard wired electric models.
